From the manor library shelf

Eight free worlds to explore
after the candles burn low

When the last visitor has gone up to bed, Mortimer opens a drawer in the library desk and lays out eight free browser games for the small hours. There is a gothic feud between vampires and werewolves, two dungeon-crawling quests, a tank arena, a fleet among the stars, a player-run trading economy and two long wars of nations to steer.

BiteFight

Gothic vampires-and-werewolves role-play · Role-play & adventure

The darkest corner of the drawer, and the one that suits a manor on a foggy hill. You choose to be a vampire or a werewolf and join a war between the two sides that never ends. Timed hunts build your strength, then you challenge players from the other camp directly and climb a ladder that stays in place from season to season.

Good for
Anyone after a simpler, darker role-playing game with a clear rival.

OGame

Space empire strategy

A space empire built from mines and research labs on a single planet. Fleets take real hours to reach their targets, which leaves them exposed on the way, so seasoned commanders scout before every move and keep their ships safely in flight overnight.

  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Good for & first steps

Good for: Patient commanders happy to live with every move for days.

Your first session
  1. Build up the mines before anything else.

Supremacy 1914

Good for: Fans of history who enjoy diplomacy as much as war.

Your first session

What all eight in the drawer cost: nothing to play, with optional in-game purchases.

01

Nothing owed at the door

Signing up costs nothing at any of the eight, and months of play are possible without paying; the hunts, the dungeons, the fleets and the wars arrive complete.

Every studio keeps a shop on the side, selling shortcuts and cosmetic trimmings. Many veterans never visit it at all, and a family sharing one computer can usually switch on spending limits in the account settings.

02

Lighting the first candle

Each button below opens the studio’s official site in a fresh tab. Each of the eight asks for a quick free registration, usually with an email address, before you begin.

Most start with a tutorial. Finish it, because it walks through the menus and the economy slowly and clearly.

03

A quick look or a long night

The strategy and trading games keep turning after you shut the tab: fleets travel, armies march, factories run and cargo moves. A glance with breakfast and another before bed keeps them in good order.

Tanki Online and Drakensang Online are the opposite, built for sitting down and playing a battle or a dungeon from start to finish, so save them for a free evening.

04

Keeping your keys safe

A login belongs to one studio alone, so only ever enter it on that studio’s published address. Give every game a different password and switch on two-step sign-in wherever it is offered.

No genuine member of studio staff will ever want your password. A stranger promising free premium currency for your login details is really after the account, so report the message and move on.

What earned each game its slip of paper in the drawer

  • Each one loads in the browser already on your desk or laptop, so the first evening needs no installing.
  • Signing up is free at all eight, and each rewards months of play with no spending whatsoever.
  • Most of them keep moving while the tab is closed, so fleets fly, armies march and hunts finish while you sleep.
  • Each has been run by its studio for years, which brings settled communities and a steady stream of updates.

No. All eight play in a computer browser; five of them add an official mobile app for anyone who wants it.

Yes, to join and to play. Signing up is free everywhere on the list, and every in-game purchase is a choice, never a requirement.

No. Each one is built and run by an independent studio, and every button here opens that studio’s own official site.

No. Each belongs to its own studio, so every game needs its own free registration.

OGame, Supremacy 1914, Khan Wars, Fallen Sword and Tanki Online have official apps alongside the browser version. BiteFight, Prosperous Universe and Drakensang Online are browser-only, so they are happiest on a computer.

Tanki Online, where a single battle is over quickly, or BiteFight for a hunt and a duel. OGame, Prosperous Universe and Supremacy 1914 reward longer planning.

In all of them. BiteFight sets two sides against each other, Khan Wars has guilds, OGame has alliances, Supremacy 1914 runs on diplomacy, Prosperous Universe is a market of real traders, and Drakensang Online, Fallen Sword and Tanki Online have co-operative or head-to-head play.
